History

Let's understand some history of why all this stuff related to consent came to focus though we had these privacy concerns and frameworks like GDPR, and CCPA in place over the years.

Digital Markets Act Regulation 2022 (EU) 2022/1925 (“DMA”), is an EU regulation that aims to make the digital economy fairer and more contestable. The regulation entered into force on 1 November 2022 and became applicable, for the most part, on 2 May 2023. — Wikipedia

A new regulation or law called the Digital Markets Act (DMA) was introduced by the European Union in 2023 to regulate the operations of digital platforms in the European Union. DMA targets the largest digital platforms operating in the European Union based on various parameters like userbase, turnover, etc. In September 2023 six companies were designated as “gatekeepers”, these companies are Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, ByteDance, Meta, and Microsoft. They were given a timeline until March 2024 to have the provisions for complying with DMA.

It’s not only for the gatekeepers to adhere to DMA but they will also develop compliance requirements for companies that use their platforms for advertising, analytics, and more.
